2003 Memorial Day Trip
(Saturday, 24 May - Monday 26 May, 2003)

I drove up to Sarah's in SF on Friday night and we had a tasty Eritrean dinner
at Massawa. We woke
early'ish on Saturday, breakfasted at the Pork Store Cafe, the hit
the road. We drove north through Inverness to near Bolinas, then turned off
on a partially-paved road that dead-ended at the Palomarin trailhead.
After a beautiful hike to Alamere Falls, we drove to Pt. Reyes Station,
moseyed around the little town, and had a yummy sandwich at the Cowgirl
Creamery. We then went to Petaluma and checked in to our room at Quality Inn.
Although it was billed as "near downtown", it proved to be several miles away
- much farther than we wanted to walk, so we drove downtown and wandered
around in search of a bar and/or restaurant. We found Zebulon's Lounge and
had a drink there, then had a decent Mediterranean dinner at Aram's Cafe. We liked
Zebulon's a lot, so we went back there for a post-dinner drink, then back to
our hotel for some much-needed sleep.
Sunday morning, we had a huge greasy breakfast at Henny Penny's (love
that name!), then drove back west to Point Reyes proper. It was very foggy,
but we had fun exploring the area. We had a good lunch at Reyes Cafe, then
headed back towards San Francisco, stopping near Mt. Tam to hike out to Dawn
Falls. After that less-than-gushing waterfall visit, we went back to the city
and had dinner with some friends at the excellent Tommy's.
On Monday, we had breakfast at All You Knead, then
drove south to Pacifica and hiked Montara
Mountain. The weather couldn't have
been nicer, and the views were spectacular! We had an early and tasty dinner
at Magnolia Pub &
Brewery, then enjoyed a quiet evening.
This was a very fun Memorial Day, with lots of beautiful hiking. Alamere
Falls and Montara Mountain were definitely the highlights. Now I really want
to go backpacking on the Coast Trail!
