    Gear for Mt. Whitney day-hike

This is the gear I brought for day-hiking the main Whitney trail:

Yes, I know this is waaaaaay more gear than is necessary. See below for what I'd use if I was to do this hike again.

    Food:

    • 8 packages Spiz, 500 Kcal each - I used 5 of them
    • 12oz beef jerkey - I ate about 1/2 of it
    • contents of 1 large can of lightly-salted peanuts - barely touched
    • 10oz pretzel bits - barely touched
    • 16oz gummy bears/worms - mostly eaten
    • 8 Clif Bars - 2 eaten
    • 8 Power Gels - 1 eaten, 1 given away
    Other:
    • Nylon pants - not used
    • Nylon windbreaker - not used
    • Tevas - I'm soooooo glad I brought these!
    • Notebook & pen
    • Iodine tablets and iodine taste neutralizer tablets - not used
    • Small medical kit - used the moleskin (awful stuff - Scholl's is much better), nothing else
    • Pur Hiker water filter - received a good deal of use
    • 100oz CamelBak water bladder
    • Petzl Zoom headlamp w/3 batteries - only 1 battery used, halogen bulb worked extremely well
    • Petzl Tikka LED headlamp - not used
    • 2AA-cell Mini-Maglite - not used
    • 4 spare AA batteries for lights and talkabout - not used
    • Sunglasses
    • Coppertone Ultra Sport SPF 45 sunscreen - one application did the job
    • Dermatone SPF 23 medicated lip balm - conveniently attached to a caribeener
    • Band-Aid "Blister Block" cushions - not used. Barry said they didn't work worth beans.
    • Compass - not used
    • Bug repellant - not used
    • Hunting knife - not used
    • Instant hand sanitizer
    • TP
    • Ibuprofen - took 6
    • Aspirin - took 4
    • Trowel
    • Emergency "space" blanket - not used
    • Sony DSC-F505V digital camera w/4 memory sticks and 2 extra batteries
    • Canon S300 digital elph camera
    • mini-tripod

    Brought, but left in car:

    • Fuzzy gloves
    • Fleece pullover
    • The usual car camping stuff

Next time, if there is a next time, I'd try to travel much lighter, packing:
    • Iodine tablets/anti-iodine tablets
    • Small first-aid kit
    • Aspirin/Ibuprofen
    • Handfull of Clif Bars and Power Gels
    • 2 liters of water storage (2/3 full 100oz bladder or 2 1l Nalgene bottles)
    • Petzl Zoom headlamp w/1 spare battery
    • "Space" blanket
    • Trowel
    • Tevas
    • Notebook & pen
    • Cold weather gear as dictated by the forecast
    • Canon S300 digital elph
    • mini-tripod
